GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE LACROSSE

AROUND TOWN

La Spada's first opened its doors in 1972 when John La Spada came to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS) from Parkside, PA.  The shop was located on Bougainvilla Drive, just south of Commercial Blvd.  Naturally John expected the top seller to be his famous Philly Cheese Steak Sub; however, the register rang up Italian Specials and well, the Philly Cheese became an afterthought.

The shop has developed a cult following from those on the barrier island or beach goers.  LaSpada's is walking distance from the beach.

John opened a shop in Margate a few years later expecting similar results but they never materialized and with a family to feed, John sold the sub shop and moved out of town around 1979 or so.  The sub's moved to its permanent home on Sea Grape Drive and has remained since.  Their sub's have remained excellent even though the founders are long gone from South Florida.

Pomperdale Deli Originally opened in 1972 and has been in the same location. Larry and Joyce Vogel purchased Pomperdale NY Jewish Deli in 1980 and the rest they say is history.   If you don't know Pomperdale's, you will never pass as a resident of the beaches.  You don't have to be Jewish to love this joint.
Elbow Room It's Fort Lauderdale's oldest bar and located on the famed A1A strip at the corner of Las Olas and A1A.
15th Street Fisheries One of the best views of the Fort Lauderdale waterway with  outstanding food.
One of the most unique dining and entertainment places in all of South Florida. Since 1956, the Mai-Kai is a Polynesian Village, complete with tiki torches, a thatch roof, and a wooden plank bridge entrance.  The Polynesian dancers keep it real.
Jack's Hamburgers Since opening Jack's Hamburgers in July 1972, owner Jack Berry has kept the brand growing strong.  On Saturday at Noon don't expect to find a seat though because locals swarm the place after every youth sporting event.  Jack Berry was maitre d' at the old Dante's Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale before opening the joint. You'll find moist hand-pressed burgers with good beefy flavors made from inside round and brisket -- cut and ground twice daily on premises.  If you are looking for the fast-food type burger, this is not for you.   The golden brown fries with steamy, fluffy white spud interiors make McD's lame.
