Frequently Asked
Questions - Youth Lacrosse Roadmap
WHAT ARE THE YOUTH
LACROSSE
OPTIONS FOR MY CHILD?
The are two levels of
youth lacrosse: recreational and competitive (aka "travel
club").
Recreational lacrosse
is where all youth begin playing. This is traditionally a Spring season
sport. There are programs offered through your city,
school or community programs such as the YMCA. Players learn
lacrosse
from volunteer parents or community coaches, with "equal" playing time for
all.
After a few years of playing at the recreational level, as a parent you
will know whether advancing to a higher level is right for your child
and your family. If not, there is plenty of excitement found in
playing recreational lacrosse.
Some city recreational programs are affiliated with US Lacrosse, the
governing body of lacrosse in the United States. US Lacrosse is
the organization that maintains the rules played by youth through age 18.
Recreational lacrosse is equal playing time for all.
This is necessary for player development and the pure joy of playing. Middle School
lacrosse teams are considered
recreational as well.
Some recreational programs offer Fall Ball during the Fall season. It is
particularly favored by those preparing for an active spring school
season.
